Splitting Axes

Gränsfors Splitting Axes are, as the name suggests, made to split wood. The axes are made to chop along the grain of the wood fibres.

Characteristics of a Splitting Axe

The concave shape of Gränsfors splitting axes allows the edge to enter the wood quickly and with minimal resistance. As the axe head goes deeper, the broader section effectively forces the wood apart, making the splitting process efficient. This design also reduces the risk of the axe head getting stuck in the wood, which is more common with slimmer axe heads.

When splitting wood, the handle is exposed to high strain close to the axe head, as it can easily strike the log being split. To protect the handle and improve durability, specific design features are therefore essential.

Key features of Gränsfors splitting axes:

  • Concave axe head shape for efficient entry and splitting

  • Reduced risk of the axe head sticking in the wood

  • Protective steel collar to protect the handle from impact during splitting

  • Grooved handle end for a secure and firm grip

Which Splitting Axe Should I Choose?

The choice of splitting axe depends on the size and type of firewood you are splitting, as well as how much power and reach you need.

Gränsfors Splitting Axes come in four sizes: the Splitting Hatchet, the Small Splitting Axe, the Large Splitting Axe and the Splitting Maul. The three smaller splitting axes share the same basic design and differ mainly in the weight of the axe head and the length of the handle.

  • The Splitting Hatchet is intended for smaller firewood and can be used with one or two hands. Its compact size makes it suitable for lighter splitting tasks.

  • The Small Splitting Axe is designed for medium-sized firewood and provides more weight and leverage than the Splitting Hatchet, while still being easy to handle.

  • The Large Splitting Axe can be used for splitting all types of firewood. It is available with either a shorter or a longer handle, allowing you to choose based on your working style and the size of the wood.

  • The Splitting Maul is the heaviest splitting axe produced by Gränsfors Bruk and is designed for very thick and knotty pieces of wood. Its heavier head and longer poll provide extra force for demanding splitting work.

When Should I Use a Splitting Axe or a Splitting Maul?

Splitting axes are used for splitting firewood by working along the grain of the wood fibres. They are suitable for most splitting tasks, depending on the size, thickness and structure of the wood.

For larger, thicker or more knotty pieces of wood, a heavier tool is often required. The Splitting Maul is designed for this type of work and is also the only splitting tool intended for striking a splitting wedge when needed.

The other Gränsfors splitting axes are designed solely for splitting and should not be used for striking a wedge or as a wedge.
