Warranty
Yes, Gränsfors Bruk leaves 20 years warranty on all axes. The warranty includes the axe head, but not the handle or the leather sheet.
All submitted warranty cards are valid. If you have lost your receipt but sent in the guarantee card, this applies.
As of September 20 2021, we have chosen to remove the warranty cards from the axe book. The choice to remove the warranty card is partly an effort to reduce our environmental impact by avoiding unnecessary post, and partly to simplify the process for you as a consumer. Instead of the warranty card, the warranty now applies upon presentation of your receipt. The warranty is however exactly the same as before.
No. As of September 20 2021, we have removed the warranty cards from the axe book. During a transition period, axes will be sold with both the old and the new axe book. The old one has a warranty card that we have now chosen to remove. You do not need to send this in, instead your purchase receipt now applies as a warranty going forward.
The warranty includes the axe head, but not the handle or the leather sheet.
Our production
Since 2019 no one of our axes have had a steel wedge, with the exception of the splitting axes. In 2016 we investigated if it would be possible to remove the steel wedge. The reason for this was first and foremost that it tears a lot on the body to fix the steel wedge on every axe. But at the same time, we also strived not to use more material and resources than necessary.
After many tests on the majority of axes and interviews with users, we then decided to remove the steel wedge on a selection of our axes. We have not received any indication that the change made in 2016 has affected the quality or functionality of the axes.
We will continue to use the steel wedge on our splitting axes since there is significantly more force used when using these axes. We then see it as extra security.
The warranty includes the axe head, but not the handle or the leather sheet.
No, there is no crack in the strict sense, it just looks that way. This phenomenon has occurred when the hole of the head has been forged and then compressed a bit when the shape of the head has been made. It is no rupture and the axe will not break.

The axe should be marked with “Gränsfors Bruks crown mark” and “the blacksmith own initials” on one side of the head, and the label “Gränsfors Bruks Sweden“ on the other side. To ensure that the axe is a genuine axe, it should also be purchased by one of the retailers found on Gränsfors Bruks website.

Yes, all Gränsfors Bruk axes are produced in Sweden in Gränsfors. Read more about our production.
The letters stands for the smith’s initials. When the blacksmith is pleased with his/her craftsmanship and thinks that the axe is well made, he/she accepts the axe with his/her initials. Thanks to the initials you can always go back and see who the person is who has made the axe.
Gränsfors Bruks handles are made of Hickory.
The steel Gränsfors Bruks is using, is specifically developed to work well for axe production. The steel should not be too hard, nor too soft and ductile. The exact description is a secret. Gränsfors Bruks is using steel from the Swedish steel company Ovako, where the steel is derived entirely from recycled scrap.
Choice of Axe
The venation may sometimes vary slightly between the handles. It´s normal since wood is a living material. It is hard to say how much the variation should be, but all axes that Gränsfors Bruk sell has a variety that is controlled and approved. The variation has very little effect concerning the function and the durability of the handle.
The Carving Axes has a relatively long, curved cutting edge which is double-sided as standard. They are also available as a special order with the edge grinded specifically for right-handed or left-handed carving.
Carving Axe, Grinded left side, has a short bevel face on the right side of the edge, if the axe is held in the right hand with the handle down and head up, with the edge facing away from you. The left side of the edge has a longer, slightly concave bevel face, which provides excellent support when carving.
Right-handed persons normally use Carving Axe, Grinded left side while the longer slightly concave bevel face come near the wood and therefore provides excellent support when carving.

Caring for your axe
To keep the axe in a better shape and keep the rust away, you may treat the axe head and the handle with some oil. In general it´s hard to say when you have to do this since this is very individual and it all depends on how long you have had your axe and how you have had it stored. For the axe head you can probably use any oil, everything from cooking oil to engine oil. The most common is probably W40 or a thin oil, like sewing machine oil. For the handle you can use teak oil or any other oil for wood – such as boiled linseed oil diluted with for example gum turpentine.
Correct axe sharpening is essential when the edge becomes dull or damaged. On this page, you will learn how to sharpen your axe correctly, maintain the proper edge, and ensure your Gränsfors Bruk axe remains safe, effective, and ready for long-term use.
If a steel axe head is struck against timber, there is very little risk of the steel being deformed or damaged. If an axe head is struck against another steel object such as a steel splitting wedge, on the other hand, the steel surfaces which strike one another are affected. An axe designed only for chopping (such as a forest axe), which does not have a large splitting head, will crack if its head is struck against steel.
Only a splitting maul, with a large head and filed edges on the head, should be used when working together with a steel splitting wedge. But even the head on a splitting maul and a steel splitting wedge will be affected and deformed when steel strikes steel.
There are a number of variables which alter how steel is affected when steel strikes steel:
Type of steel (ductile or less ductile).
Whether or not the steel (e.g. the axe head) is hardened – the hardness.
The shape of the steel surface – flat, convex or concave, filed edges.
The mass of the two steel bodies – how large they are.
The force of the blow.
How firmly the receiving steel is mounted in its base – what resistance.
The steel will deform less if it is hardened, but at the same time there is a greater risk of the surface of the steel cracking and “shooting” steel chips from an edge. This can be very hazardous. Gränsfors Bruk recommends that protective goggles and sturdy clothing should always be worn when striking steel on steel.
What is said here about striking steel on steel is also applicable to some extent when striking steel on stone.
If the head of a splitting maul is not hardened, there is less risk of steel chips “shooting” from the edges, but the steel is deformed and swells out at the edges and gradually starts to look like a mushroom if its edges are not maintained. If the striking of steel on steel continued, the edges of the head swell and crack, resulting in hazardous steel chips easily working loose and flying off.
Gränsfors Bruk does not harden the heads of either its splitting mauls or its steel splitting wedges so as to reduce the risk of steel chips “shooting” from the edges when steel is struck against steel. The edges of the heads are filed into bevels – the edges are bevelled – so as to prevent, to some extent, the steel heads deforming in a hazardous manner when steel is struck against steel, and to further reduce the risk of hazardous chips “shooting” from the edges. It is important for these filed bevels to be maintained so that they retain their original shape and angle. The easiest way to do this is using an ordinary steel file.
More information on the risk involved in striking steel against steel and the importance of maintaining the files edges (bevels) on the splitting maul and the head of the steel splitting wedge can be found in The Axe Book.
The axe should be stored in a dry place at normal room temperature and humidity. If the teperature is to high, the head can drought and lose its grip to the handle. If the humidity is to high, the axe can easily rust.
Correct axe rehandling is essential when a handle becomes worn or loose. On this page, you will learn how to replace and fit an axe handle correctly, ensuring your Gränsfors Bruk axe remains safe, balanced, and ready for long-term use.
Unfortunately we do not accept axes for regrinding and/or changing the handles, that are sent to us. Are you though planning to visit us and see our production, we are usually able to help you with both regrinding and changing the handle for a small fee.
Since wood is a living material, the handle can shrink and get loose if the axe has been stored for a long period in the warm environment. It is quite easy to change a handle.
It is possible to buy new handles and leathter sheets here at the webshop or via Gränsfors Bruks Retailers.
