Sloyd axes and Carving axes

Specialised tools for sloyd and woodworking where precision, control and stability are essential.

Carving Axes and the Carpenter’s Axe

Gränsfors Carving Axes and the Carpenter’s Axe are specialised tools for sloyd and woodworking where precision, control and stability are essential. Developed in close collaboration with experienced craftsmen, each axe is designed for a specific type of work, from detailed carving to precise shaping in dry wood.

Characteristics of Carving Axes

Carving Axes are designed for detailed woodworking and sculpting, where accuracy and responsiveness are more important than power. They are characterised by relatively long, slightly curved cutting edges that provide good contact with the wood and excellent control during carving.

The different models vary in size and weight to suit different working styles. Smaller carving axes offer high precision and are easy to handle over longer periods, while larger models provide greater reach and stability for shaping larger pieces of wood.

Gränsfors Carving Axes are available in three diffrent sizes
  • Gränsfors Small Carving Axe

  • Gränsfors Medium Carving Axe

  • Gransfors Large Carving Axe

Characteristics of the Carpenter’s Axe

The Carpenter’s Axe has a long, thin and straight cutting edge with a straight bevel face and a narrower poll. This design provides an even cutting surface and is particularly well suited for precise carving and shaping work.

The forged inward curve from the heel to the lip of the head allows the hand to be positioned almost directly above the centre of the cutting edge, giving excellent stability and control. The straight handle is designed to suit different grips and makes the axe suitable for work in dry wood.

The grinding of Carving Axes

Carving Axes are supplied as standard with a double-sided sharpened edge. For more specialised carving, the axes can also be ordered with a carving grind, adapted for right-handed or left-handed use.

With a carving grind, the edge is ground more on one side, creating a longer, slightly concave bevel face. This bevel face lies closer to the wood during carving and provides additional support and control.

Choosing grinding for right- and left-handed carving

The choice of grinding affects how the axe rests against the wood and how stable it feels during carving.

  • Right-handed users usually choose an axe with the left side ground, so that the longer, slightly concave bevel face comes closest to the wood and provides better support.

  • Left-handed users usually choose an axe with the right side ground, for the same reason.

  • The standard double-sided grind works well for general carving, while a carving grind offers increased control for more advanced and detailed work.

Which Sloyd Axe Should I Choose?

Small Carving Axe

The Small Carving Axe is well suited for fine carving and detailed work where precision and low weight are important, making it a good choice for beginners or those who prefer a lighter tool. Perfect for those who:

  • Are beginners in carving or prefer a tool that is easy to handle over longer periods

  • Want a smaller, lighter carving axe for increased precision and control

  • Want an edge grind adapted to their carving style

Medium Carving Axe

The Medium Carving Axe offers a balance of power and precision and is suitable for both new and experienced carvers who want a versatile carving axe. Perfect for those who:

  • Want a balanced carving axe combining power and precision

  • Prefer a size and weight suitable for both beginners and experienced carvers

  • Want an edge grind adapted to their carving style

Large Carving Axe

The Large Carving Axe is intended for larger pieces and more substantial shaping work, where the longer cutting edge and increased stability provide better support.

  • Are more experienced carvers who want to benefit from the added weight when shaping and carving

  • Work with larger pieces of wood and need a carving axe with greater reach and stability

  • Want a longer, curved cutting edge that provides good support during shaping and carving

  • Need increased control when shaping wood, where the longer, slightly concave bevel face supports the axe against the wood

Carpenters Axe

For work that requires a high level of stability, straight cuts and precise control—such as fine woodworking and shaping dry wood—the Carpenter’s Axe is a suitable choice. Its straight edge and centred hand position provide excellent control during detailed work.

  • Work with precision woodworking where straight, clean cuts and high stability are required

  • Want maximum control, with the hand positioned close to the centre of the cutting edge

  • Primarily work in dry wood and need an axe suited for controlled, accurate shaping
