Hickory

Designed through tradition and experience, our axe handles combine ergonomics, durability and carefully selected materials.

The handle is a crucial part of an axe’s performance, durability and feel. By combining traditional craftsmanship with modern understanding of ergonomics and materials, Gränsfors Bruk uses handles that are strong, flexible and comfortable to use. Every step, from wood selection to surface treatment, is carefully considered to ensure long service life and reduced impact on natural resources.

Design, Material and Treatment

The handle on Gränsfors Bruk’s axes was designed by Hans Erik Persson. Traditional principles have been embraced and adapted to meet the demands of today’s users. The ergonomic shape provides a steady and comfortable grip, even when working at arm’s length.

Gränsfors Bruk’s handles are made from hickory, an ideal wood because it is both strong and flexible, with long, parallel fibres. These properties increase the life of the handle and help reduce the consumption of nature’s resources.

Before turning, the wood is dried to prevent further drying and shrinkage once the axe head has been fitted. One of the most common causes of an axe head coming loose is the use of a green, undried handle that later dries out, shrinks and loosens.

To further improve quality and durability, the handle is soaked in hot linseed oil and then treated with beeswax, making it more resistant to dirt and water.
