Handle production moves closer to Gränsfors Bruk
17 September 2026
Gränsfors Bruk’s axe handles will be manufactured at sister company Svedbro Smide, close to the axe forge in Sweden. The investment brings more of the production process together within the same company group and local area. The aim is to have production up and running by summer 2027.
In 2025, the group acquired the company in southern Sweden that had been manufacturing Gränsfors Bruk’s axe handles. Preparations are now underway to relocate the operation to Svedbro Smide, where a 2,400-square-metre factory extension will accommodate the business. The move also includes investment in new machinery and modern production technology.
For Gränsfors Bruk, this brings handle production closer to the axe forge, with both forging and wooden handle manufacturing based in the same local area.
Greater control over the value chain
Keeping large parts of the value chain within the group makes it easier to oversee and develop production, from working the steel and wood to completing the finished axe. It helps ensure quality and reliable deliveries while retaining knowledge of the products and how they are made.
The proximity also makes it easier for the companies to collaborate on production and product development. With handle manufacturing and the forge close together, the path from an idea to testing and improving the finished product becomes shorter.
A long-term commitment to Swedish manufacturing
Svedbro Smide currently manufactures wrecking bars and the Stalpen tree felling jack. The new operation will add wooden handle production, primarily using hickory, for companies within the group and external customers. The investment is also expected to create more local jobs over time.
For Gränsfors Bruk and sister company Svedbro Smide, the expansion is part of a long-term commitment to maintaining and developing manufacturing in Sweden. Bringing more production together locally strengthens both the companies’ own expertise and the surrounding manufacturing community.
