TRADITIONAL BLACKSMITHING

The Basic Course in Forging is for those who wish to learn more of the fundamental skills of traditional blacksmithing and immerse themselves into the craft. With the guidance of an experienced smith’s step-by-step instruction you will gain a more profound glimpse into the fascinating world of forging hot steel.

Focus during the 5 days is on gaining an understanding of the smithy, the heat, and the art of working the hot steel with the help of hammer and anvil. Techniques addressed may include bending, tapering, upsetting, splitting and even punching holes. During the course you will forge such items as hooks, nails, door handle, simple knife and a candleholder. There is even room for your own ideas.

THIS IS INCLUDED IN THE BASIC COURSE

  • 5 days of teaching by an experienced blacksmith at your own hearth in Gränsfors Bruk’s course forge.
  • Meals at Restaurant Augustas in Gränsfors and lodging (single room/shared double room) in our houses in the village of Gränsfors.
  • Free access to our wood-fired sauna and to the Axe Museum.
  • All forging materials, the little Axe Book & the book Swedish Blacksmithing. A guided tour of the production and a 20% discount in Gränsfors Bruk’s factory store during the course.
  • Insurance during the course and protective equipment to borrow.
  • Issued course certificate.
  • Everything you forge during the course.

Instruction in Swedish and English. Maximum number of participants per course is 10. Minimum age is 16. No previous experience required, but if you have previous experience, you will have the opportunity to forge more challenging projects.
