Information about cooperation between Wetterlings & Gränsfors Bruk

March 10, 2017

Dear Customer,

Gränsfors Bruk has manufactured hand forged axes since 1902. During all these years, we have continuously developed alongside our competitors. Today there are not that many axe forges left of the traditional kind. Since 2016 Wetterlings Axes belongs to the same company group as Gränsfors Bruk.

Since Wetterlings over the past ten years has faced decreased sales and insufficient profitability, a decision has been made to no longer manufacture axes under the Wetterlings brand. Instead Wetterlings forge will become an additional production site for Gränsfors Bruk.

The two forges have many similarities in the way we forge, grind and fit the axe with a handle. Our choices in material are also equivalent. Right now, the process of transferring Gränsfors Bruk’s way of working to Wetterlings is ongoing. By this act we preserve and develop Wetterlings Axe Forge and we retain the employees’ experience and know-how.

We see great opportunities in this and believe we will be stronger when we cooperate. We will have greater potential and resources to develop our business even further. We will also have the privilege to preserve an important part of Sweden’s craft history by cherishing these cultural sites that our forges are.

Wetterlings Axe Forge and Gränsfors Bruk will hence continue to develop each other. Only now as part of the same team and not as competitors.

Product changes

March 6, 2017

Here is some information regarding product changes on Gränsfors Axes.

During February 2016, You were informed that we excluded the steel wedge on some of our axes. The main reason was that we due to testing and experience could not see the purpose of it.

Our tools for attaching the handle to the axe is nowadays reliable enough. Since we strive for a minimal use of material, if the quality and functionality is not at stake, we therefore excluded the steel wedge.

Another year of experience has passed and we have had no indication that the functionality and quality have suffered from the change.

Therefore, we will now abandon the steel wedge on all our axes. The steel wedge will therefore be removed on all Gränsfors Axes, with the exception of Splitting Axes in a first stage.

We will still provide the wooden wedge with the metal wedge as a complement. Using the steel wedge when re-handling the axe is motivated as an extra security.

There will be a mixture of axes with and without steel wedge during the transition.

Product Change

February 19, 2016

We have now made design changes on some products. The steel wedge on the top of the handle will be removed. The steel wedge works as an extra support for the wooden wedge that is used to fix the axe head to the handle. The reliability in process when attaching the handles has been improved, which means that the steel wedge is not necessary. Based on trials and experience we have now decided to remove the steel wedge on the products listed below.

Since we continuously strive for not using more materials and components than necessary, without compromising on functionality, we have therefore decided to stop using steel wedge on:

413                                                  Hand Hatchet
415                                                  Wildlife Hatchet
473-R, RH, RV                              Small Carving Hatchet (all variants)
474-R, RH, RV                              Large Carving Hatchet (all variants)
475, -R, -RH, -RV                         Large Carving Axe (all variants)

Naturally there will be a mixture of axes with and without steel wedge during the transition.
