This is a new course for those who want to try the fascinating process of making pattern welded steel, also known as Damascus – a more advanced forging technique. Pattern welding is the process of forge-welding several layers of different steels into one piece, drawing out, folding, and then repeating the process to create beautiful patterns in the steel. You will first learn to create the material to then forge it into a chef’s knife where the striking pattern can be revealed on a functional item.
The focus of this 5 days course is on the pattern welding and forging, with time allowed for hardening, grinding, and etching of the finished blade. The knife you forge will either include an integral steel handle from the same material as the blade, or a prepared tang for attaching a handle after the course. Because forge-welding is a challenging process we recommend some forging experience for this course.
INCLUDED IN THE COURSE
- 5 days of teaching by an experienced blacksmith at your own hearth in Gränsfors Bruk’s course forge.
- Meals at Restaurant Augustas in Gränsfors and lodging (single room/shared double room) in our houses in the village of Gränsfors.
- Free access to our wood-fired sauna and to the Axe Museum.
- All forging materials, the little Axe Book & the book Swedish Blacksmithing.
- A guided tour of the production and a 20% discount in Gränsfors Bruk’s factory store during the course.

Instruction in Swedish and English. Maximum number of participants per course is 10. Minimum age is 18. Some forging experience recommended.
